Turn empty plastic bottles into a space-saving vertical garden and enjoy fresh lettuce and green onions right at home. This simple project is perfect for balconies, patios, small yards, or sunny windows.

Materials You'll Need

  • 2-liter plastic bottles
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • Drill or nail (for drainage holes)
  • Strong string, rope, or wire
  • Potting soil
  • Compost
  • Lettuce seeds or seedlings
  • Green onion bulbs or seeds

Step 1: Prepare the Bottles

  1. Wash the bottles thoroughly.
  2. Cut a rectangular opening on one side.
  3. Make several drainage holes on the bottom.
  4. Punch holes at both ends for hanging.

Step 2: Build the Vertical Garden

  • Thread rope or wire through the bottles.
  • Leave space between each bottle for plant growth.
  • Hang the structure securely on a wall, fence, balcony railing, or frame.

Step 3: Add Soil

Fill each bottle with a light, well-draining mix:

  • 70% potting soil
  • 30% compost

Do not pack the soil too tightly.

Step 4: Plant Your Vegetables

🥬 Lettuce

  • Plant seeds about ¼ inch (6 mm) deep.
  • Thin seedlings to provide enough space.
  • Harvest outer leaves regularly for continuous production.

🧅 Green Onions

  • Plant bulbs with the roots facing downward.
  • Keep the white base just below the soil surface.
  • Cut leaves as needed; they will regrow multiple times.

Step 5: Water and Sunlight

  • Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
  • Place the garden where it receives:
    • Lettuce: 4–6 hours of sunlight daily
    • Green onions: 5–6 hours of sunlight daily

Care Tips for Better Harvests 🌱

Water regularly, especially during hot weather.
Add compost every few weeks.
Remove yellow or damaged leaves promptly.
Rotate bottles occasionally if one side receives more sunlight.
Plant new lettuce seeds every few weeks for a continuous harvest.
